The question

A forestry company wanted to restore drained peat and needed a baseline before any ditch was blocked.

Approach

Level loggers were set in a grid across the bog. Surface height was re-levelled twice a year from benchmarks on mineral ground.

What we found

Drained strips sank measurably while untouched hummocks held. The baseline gave the restoration team a before and after they could both trust.

Limits

Peat swells and shrinks with the seasons. Two readings a year cannot separate that from true subsidence.
