The question

The infrastructure manager asked which stretches of embankment were at risk as the river shifted its bends.

Approach

Bank lines from four surveys were overlaid, and the distance between track and bank was tracked at every hundred metres.

What we found

Two outer bends moved toward the line faster than the rest. Both were fitted with monitoring points and put on the inspection round.

Limits

Bank movement was measured above the waterline only. Scour below it is not in this model.
